The story of Susannah and the elders is a legendary tale related in the apocryphal part of the Bible. Two elders of the community desired Susannah, the wife of a prosperous Jew. They plotted to seduce her while she bathed in her garden, as was her custom. They threatened to accuse her of adultery with a young man, for which the punishment was death, unless she succumbed to them. She refused and cried for help but was later found guilty before a court, a victim of their false claims. Only when the two men were separated by Daniel, and gave conflicting evidence, was her innocence discovered.

Originally a story of justice, visually, it became an opportunity to paint female nudity.
