Supper at Emmaus, biblical/religious theme, common subject in Christian art. Inspired by the story first told in St.Lukes Gospel, three days after Jesus's crucifixion two of his apostles invite a stranger to dinner to share their meal with them, without recognising Jesus as this weary stranger. Roberts use of chiaroscuro in this etching illuminates Jesus as the central figure, his light emanating onto the two figures beside him. Christ directly looks at the viewer with a soft smile on his face, creating a direct an intimate experience with the viewer, whilst the other two figures seemingly engage in conversation, all of Christ's attention is directed at the viewer. The angle of the dinner table points towards the viewer in the foreground and offers a ceramic jug as if to invite the viewer in.
