Julius Olsson first came to St Ives in 1890, the year of this first success at the Royal Academy. In 1895 he set up a school of landscape and marine painting in the town. He was a fervent believer in sketching out of doors and had his students standing before their easels on Porthmeor beach in all conditions. Known for his seascapes, he considered that it was only by constant observation and hard work that sea painting could be mastered, especially the study of reflected light on water surfaces. An avid sailor, he spent the summer months cruising on his yacht and some of his works may have originated from views he saw from the deck. He was a founder member of the St Ives Art Club and its President three times. In 1920 he was elected to the Royal Academy.
