The Shiants are a small group of islands in the Hebrides of north-west Scotland. They lie 12 miles from the northern tip of Skye and four miles off the coast of Lewis. The artist evokes atmosphere and changing light in this painting with bold, powerful colours and contrast. Houston was honoured with a major retrospective at The Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art in 2005.
