This painting of around 1920 depicts the artist's garden, viewed from his house at Vernonnet in the Seine valley. The woman at lower right may be his wife Marthe. An earlier version of this view (Courtauld Institute Galleries, London), painted around 1910, has a more sombre palette. In his later years Bonnard was fascinated by the relationship between interiors and gardens. Margaret Davies purchased this work in 1960.
