A large sundial with elaborate gnomon, and dial set on the ground. The surround of the sundial gives a chronological history of London, from 43 AD, Roman conquest, to 1992. When building the new station entrance at Tower Hill Underground in the early 1990s, London Underground Ltd were left with the problem of what to do with the flat area outside the station. There were problems involving the sightlines of neighbouring buildings and erecting anything there which may have affected these was a sensitive issue. The idea of producing a garden area was decided upon and John Chitty, a landscape architect, was commissioned for the job, in the course of which the idea of a sundial in the centre of the garden came to him. This was developed jointly by Chitty, the landscape architect, and Edwin Russell as sculptor.
