Engle enjoys the ambiguous visual associations that arise through painting, and plays with relationships between recognisable objects and their abstractions. She describes her strongest inspiration as a response to shapes, which she encounters by chance. Sometimes one particular shape or motif will acquire an intensity and a visual significance. In her studio, working with acrylic on wooden board, observed and recorded shapes might change scale, become colourful or muted, defined or indefinite. The identity of the original shape might grow stronger or disappear. She says of this painting and two other works entitled 'Ghost' and 'Unleaving': 'They all took their starting point from a quickly glimpsed shape which then became more important'.
