The house in this painting is Vine Cottage, belonging to Theodore’s grandmother in South Harting, Hampshire. Between the years 1939–1946, Theodore and his sister Esther moved here to escape the portending peril of the Second World War. Theo flourished during this period; immersing himself in the agricultural way of life, he took up work as a farmer, became a conscientious objector and attended a painting class in his spare time.
