According to the artist's husband, Sidney Burrard, the model for this painting was restless and would not sit still unless he could smoke. He complained that his medals and ribbons were not being given sufficient prominence in the painting, but Gertrude Burrard replied that she was painting a soldier and not his medals. Thapa replied that if his medals were right, nothing else mattered, so they were made slightly more prominent.

This is one of two paintings of the same subject by the artist in the National Army Museum Collection. It was awarded the Governor of Bombay’s prize for best picture (out of 519 paintings) at the Western India Exhibition, Poona, in 1894.

Gertrude Ellen Burrard accompanied her husband Sidney Burrard, an Indian Army Officer, around the Indian subcontinent during his time as Superintendent on the Trigonometrical Survey of India.
