Brown wooden board of higher quality with large, chamfered edges the entire way around the study, again this would be used for more effective storage, so no paintings would get smudged. It is signed on the front but also twice on the back both with, ‘Alfred Munnings’ and ‘A. J. Munnings’, also the title ‘My favourite panel, 1950’ was written by him. The board has visible preparation on the front as the ochre wash can be seen clearly. The ochre wash is framed between two trees in the upper corners of the study and a large hedgerow along the longest side, creating the effect of an evening sky. This particular study is well detailed and it is clear that Munnings wanted to create a landscape similar to this. There is some experimentation with colour on the hedgerow as some highlights are clearly shown in a light green colour, adding to the fact that this may have been a study for another painting.
