The Delphic Sibyl was the priestess of Apollo, who guarded the oracle at Delphi. This is a study for the head of the full length 'Sibylla Delphica', now in Manchester Art Gallery. The finished painting, in which Botticelli's influence is apparent in the drapery, is purely decorative, in the Aesthetic style.
