The Birthday Party' was one of Gotch’s last major pictures. It was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1930 and appears in Royal Academy Illustrated. The main picture was slightly larger than this study and was originally purchased by the MacKelvie Public Galleries, Auckland, New Zealand.

The painting was probably inspired by the birthday party of Gotch’s granddaughter, who would have been 14 years of age on March 19 1929. It demonstrates Gotch’s talent as a colourist in the treatment of artificial light and the fine transparency he painted into such illuminations.
