Typical of Bacon’s work in this period, 'Study for Portrait No. 6' shows an anonymous, suited figure (possibly taken from the newspaper or magazine cuttings Bacon collected) enclosed in a claustrophic box-like space. His arms truncated, the man’s torso merges into his surroundings, heightening the sense of enclosure. One of the highlights of the Hatton collection, Professor Kenneth Rowntree selected this work from the Contemporary Art Society’s 1961 display of recent acquisitions held at the Whitechapel Art Gallery. The Society had in turn acquired the painting with funds provided by Robert Sainsbury, an early patron of Bacon.
