This study was used for the finished painting, 'George V Riding His Favourite Pony "Jock" in Sandringham Great Park', 1936. This was Munnings's only posthumous portrait. It was commissioned for the Hon. Douglas Tollemache who gave it to the town of Ipswich. It still hangs in Christchurch Mansion, Ipswich. The painting was completed in the grounds of Sandringham, Norfolk, with French, King George's groom, sitting on the pony as a model. Munnings used photographs of the King to gain the likeness. The painting was displayed at the Royal Academy in 1937. A print publisher wanted to reproduce it and went with Munnings, to Marlborough House, in order to ask Queen Mary's permission. She refused, stating that although the painting was very good and a perfectly accurate representation, '.
