Freely painted oil sketch of 'Albert Square, Manchester'. On the right of the composition is the statue of Gladstone seen in profile facing the right, mounted on an imposing, waisted pedestal. In the centre is the smaller statue of Oliver Heywood, depicted in lighter colours, and to the left is the towering form of the Albert Memorial with its spire extending beyond the picture edge. The shadowy forms of pedestrians populate the square and to the left are parked motor cars. In the background are the hazy silhouettes of surrounding buildings.
