Freely painted study for the painting of Albert Square, executed on a tall, rectangular board. To the right of the composition is a figurative statue on a high pedestal, below which is the dark figure of a pedestrian drawn with minimal detail in loose brush strokes. The left half of the composition is dominated by a dark mass, presumably a building, below which is horse-drawn carriage seen moving away from the viewer.
