The studio interior depicted is that at the Bath Academy of Art, Corsham, Wiltshire, where Brooker taught from 1949 to 1953.

The painting’s alternative title ‘Model Resting’ suggests the reclining model has just finished modelling for a life drawing class. As a student at Corsham, Howard Hodgkin recalled how Brooker would arrange a model on a bed against a background of fabric and wallpaper for them to draw.
