Brown board which looks rather cheap, chamfered edge on the two shorter sides which normally would be all the way around the board, Munnings used this so when he stored the boards in his wooden boxes, they would not smudge the other paintings. No visible preparation or ochre wash which Munnings would have traditionally used for many of his studies and larger oil paintings. However, there is a very thin wash of oil in green and brown tones, one can infer that on the easel the green paint has run down the board towards the bottom left-hand corner. It depicts an unfinished ewe, a lamb and a more detailed study of a ram or sheep’s head. The lamb and the mother are lying down in a way that could be possible for a future composition. There are a lot of contrasts between the dark and light which brings out much of the detail on the animals, such as the use of the backgrounds’ green oil wash to find tonal values where the shadow would be cast, which is always effective in Munnings' paintings as seen with the grey horses.
