This painting shows Market Street, St Andrews, in the snow. Students can be seen wearing the traditional red undergraduate gown that has become synonymous with St Andrews. Originally introduced back in 1672 as a means of student control to stop tavern visits, the woollen scarlet gowns have long since ceased to be compulsory, yet remain popular.
