Allen became Principal of Farnham Art School in 1888. He is renowned as a painter of the landscape in Surrey, exhibiting at the Royal Academy from 1904 to 1929. He also painted in France and Italy. He lived for most of his life in Farnham.

Amongst his earliest pupils was the future architect Harold Falkner, whose first commission was to design a house for Allen. This house was called ‘Stranger’s Corner’ and can still be seen today on the Tilford Road. This beautiful painting shows the garden of the house in 1903. It is signed with Allen’s monogram.
