This stone relief by Susanna Heron is located at the new Library and Study Centre by Wright & Wright Architects for St John’s College, Oxford. This work represents the artist’s largest work to date. It occupies both exterior and interior faces of the wall between the President’s Garden and the Foyer. Heron explains her thinking in the following way: ‘The drawing for the relief was conceived as a rectangle, a dense texture of lines falling across three overlapping planes of the west-facing elevation of the Library and Study Centre. I treated the thick stone walls as if they were transparent, making a single three-dimensional composition and reversing the drawing on the interior. Where the stones overlap at the wall-ends, it both reverses and repeats like a double reflection…The lines of this original drawing form a sort of thicket, appearing as a jumble of lines both falling across the grid of the wall and taking account of it, governed by an accumulative, natural law.
