An international group of submarines operated out of Dundee during the Second World War. Some of the submariners married locally and became part of the Dundee community. The central stone in the memorial has six windows in the shape of the six missing submarines lost during the war. Six side panels list the missing submariners. A seventh panel names men delivered to Norway on operations by submarine but captured and executed by the Gestapo.
