Winifred McKenzie trained at the Glasgow School of Art and the Grosvenor School of Modern Art, London. This painting includes a decorative ceramic jug with poppies. One of the poppies is blue, while the other seven are red. The white jug features purple decorations. The thick texture of the paint creates a three-dimensional effect on the canvas. The jug projects a shadow on the surface it stands upon; however, most of the background is abstract. Different tones of blue arranged in square sections break up the background of the painting to suggest depth. Blue is also used to shade objects.
