Dennis Peploe was son of the artist Samuel John Peploe. He studied first at Edinburgh College of Art and then in the studio of Andre Lhote in Paris. Before the Second World War, Peploe travelled extensively around the Mediterranean and then did wartime service from 1940–1946. Returning to Edinburgh College of Art after the war, he taught painting and drawing there until 1979.
