The artist was a painter of fruit, flowers and still life. He was born and died in Leyden and his works are principally to be found in Holland. He was known in his own time for his skilful copies of works by other more famous artists, in particular de Heem and Mignon, which are said to have been executed so well as to deceive patrons of those artists at the time. This painting is one of a generous gift of seven oil paintings presented anonymously to the Art Fund for display in the Judges' Lodgings Museum, Lancaster. They have remained together as a collection since they were brought together in London in the late nineteenth century.
