Gillig spent his life in Utrecht, specialising in painting still-life compositions of fish. In this characteristically pyramidal composition, he paints two perch, a gutted pike, several roach and other freshwater fish. In his early works, he sometimes painted seawater fish but freshwater fish became his main interest.
