This tactile still life illustrates the artist’s interest in texture and the organisation of a picture’s compositional elements. The dove traditionally symbolises peace but also the presence of God. A sense of loss is evoked by the empty candleholder and the handful of pink and red flowers, which offset the sombre palette. A Polish-born émigré, who settled in Germany, Adler was forced to leave in 1933 after the Nazis rose to power.
