Actor, director and writer. Born in the East End of London, of Russian immigrant descent, and educated at the Raines Foundation Grammar School, Stepney and the Grocers' Company School, Hackney. Berkoff has written a number of plays, principally East (1977), West (1985), Sink the Belgrano (1986) which he directed at the Mermaid Theatre, and Kvetch (1987). Among his adaptations was Kafka's The Trial (1991), for the National Theatre.
