The artist studied art at the Slade School of Fine Art, and also in Paris and Munich. At the Slade he was taught by Sir John Poynter and he was also encouraged by such notable artists as Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema and Sir John Everett Millais. Although Collier painted the occasional landscape, his works tended to be portraits or dramatic subject pictures. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1874 to 1934. His wife and father were also painters.
