'Staggerly' is made from three separate canvases hung together to create an irregular-shaped painting. Although seemingly abstract, the painting is inspired by packets of Lucky Strike cigarettes. Picking up on the brand’s distinctive design – a red circle on a white background – three packets are shown ‘staggered’ against a background of red and blue banding. 'Staggerly' has been painted in both flat colour and more expressive brushwork. In the 1950s Smith was influenced by the latest developments in the United States, in particular the painting of the American Abstract Expressionists. He began to produce large, abstract canvases painted in fluid, gestural brushwork. Living and working in New York between 1959 and 1961 he began to be aware of the power of consumer culture.
