In 1964 Sir George Edwards became the University's founding Pro-Chancellor. He was one of Britain's foremost aeronautical engineers, having risen from his first job in the aircraft industry in the drawing office of Vickers Ltd in 1935, to becoming its Chief Designer, and subsequently Managing Director and Chairman of the British Aircraft Corporation, which in turn became part of Airbus UK and BAE Systems. Amongst many distinguished colleagues, probably the best known is Sir Barnes Wallis, and probably the best known project is the Concorde. His distinguished career was acknowledged with the highest possible honours. He was a Fellow of the Royal Society of the Royal Academy of Engineering and was awarded the MBE in 1945, the CBE in 1952 and knighted in 1957.
