Impressionistic view of St Mark's Square, or Piazzo San Marco, Venice, with crowds of people littering the square, looking towards the multi-domed building, which is the Church of Saint Mark dating from the fifteenth century. Whilst the paintwork is dappled and mottled, the famous Byzantine church is nevertheless captured in its full glory, set against a somewhat drab-looking, grey sky. The paintmarks are easily visible and the colour work is stark at times; this captures the church in a realist context, as the changing effects of light are documented. The colours of the painting reflect the overcast sky; greys, blues and yellows are used, all in flat, murky tones.
