The paintings of Matisse and watercolours of Raoul Dufy were further major stimuli to McNairn’s art in the 1930s, as may be seen in this 1936 oil of St Malo in Brittany, with its high viewpoint, strong colouring and dramatic presentation. After war service in India, McNairn moved to Selkirk where he lives today.
