Together with 'Tobias and the Angel', this shaped panel was part of a large altarpiece, probably made for a church in Cremona in the early 1520s, of which the centre panel with 'The Virgin and Child' and the predella with scenes from the life of St Helena are known. According to legend, Helena (c.255–c.330), the mother of the emperor Constantine, discovered the True Cross in Jerusalem and she is depicted as a regal figure holding a cross. The predella scenes show 'St Helena questioning Judas', 'The Finding of the True Cross' and 'The Proving of the True Cross'. Altobello was interested in the painterly qualities of Giorgione and Titian and in the strong expressive forms of Gerolamo Romanino and Dürer.
