On the night of Sunday 28th February 1853, a fire broke out in the medieval St George’s Church in Doncaster. By one o’clock the following morning the church was ruined, even though the fire brigade from York had travelled to Doncaster by special train to assist with the fire fighting efforts.

An eyewitness account stated that ‘there was but little smoke, a proof of the dry nature of the ignited materials; but a huge fiery rain of sparks rose high into the air and was impelled by a gentle wind from the north west over the adjoining houses.’
