On March 30th 1899 the LSWR passenger steamer ‘Stella’, sank on the Casquets reef, with a loss of 105 lives. It is thought the ship was travelling too fast for the foggy conditions and consequently struck a rock. There were stories of great bravery that day, none more so than that of a stewardess named Mrs Rogers who lost her life saving others. The event has been described as the Channel Island’s ‘Titanic’.
