Sprotborough Hall near Doncaster was built for Sir Godfrey Copley, who was a scientist between 1696 and 1700. The wings of the Hall were added shortly after. The layout of the house is said to have reflected the Palace of Versailles. The house is set in extensive gardens which were laid out in the Dutch style. The hall was demolished in 1926 and the parkland used for a housing estate.
