Born in the United States, Kitaj came to Oxford in 1958 to attend the Ruskin School under the terms of the American GI Bill, which offered further training to ex-servicemen. A year later he transferred to the Royal College of Art and graduated at the same time as many of the key Pop Artists and worked closely with Eduardo Paolozzi, thus becoming associated with the movement. However, Kitaj allies himself with Surrealism rather than Pop, many of his works being composed out of 'free association' and relating to the subconscious. His paintings draw on complex sources from art, literature, history and politics, stemming from his collection of clippings from 'Life' magazine and his encounter with the Journal of the Warburg and Courtauld Institutes at the Ashmolean Library.
