Helen Cochrane and her invalid husband spent long periods in the warm climate of Italy. They owned a villa in Liguria. Much of the subject matter of her paintings is drawn from the Mediterranean countryside.

A fellow artist, Maxwell Armfield spent several months at the Cochrane’s villa, teaching Helen tempera painting. She was fascinated by the laborious medieval technique, and became a member of the Tempera Society.
