Lobley presented this monumental painting of soldiers of the Duke of Wellington’s Regiment in the trenches of Flanders for display in Huddersfield Town Hall. It is known that the painting was in the Town Hall in 1925, but at some stage subsequently was moved to its current position on the balcony of Huddersfield Drill Hall. John Hodgson Lobley was born in Huddersfield in 1878, son of a woolen merchant.
