Rosa was an important exponent of seventeenth-century landscape painting, contrasting sharply with the more serene and classical views of Claude and Poussin. Rosa was drawn to the rocky coastline and interior landscape around Naples and in this work, like many others, he dwarfs the soldiers depicted in a dark and dramatic gorge and beneath a dominant central tree. His works were popular with British Grand Tourists in Italy, appealing strongly to the emergent Romantic movement at the end of the eighteenth century.
