Genre scene of five men in hats playing cards in a wooden interior, the high hats and costumes give away that they are civic guards. On the right, one man sits far away from the table, leaning in just like the viewer has to in order to see the cards. In front of the table a man is depicted from the side just as he puts his card down. Another man sitting at the table looks at the man to see if he can break his ‘pokerface’, while two others, each on one side of the chair, look over his shoulder at his cards and those played on the table. Known for his depictions of the Dutch civic guards, Simon Kick painted several soldiering subjects in the style of Jacob le Ducq. Here he shows soldiers playing cards, using a drum for a table, a familiar motif in le Ducq's work.
