The pier at St Ives harbour was built by John Smeaton in 1767–1770 but was lengthened at a later date. The lookout with a cupola belongs to Smeaton's design. Octagonal in form, it rests on a large square plinth, has a domed metal roof and iron, railed balcony. It is largely used as a lighthouse.
