Inspired by an interest in natural history and the work of biologists and landscape historians, Karen Purple engages with the formation of the landscape and the organic materials within it. On her daily encounters with nature she collects found objects and substances, raw pigments such as coloured ochres and green earths, plant materials and natural inks. These materials become embedded in her work and are used to recreate the experience of time spent in a place. The artist regards the tabula rasa on which she works as 'an arena for the act of remembering'. The resulting finished work offers a gesture or glimpse of an experience; these small, intimate and sensitively recorded studies evoke a meditative response.
