Paul Furneaux is an Edinburgh-based artist who was born in Ellon, Aberdeenshire in 1962 and studied Drawing and Painting at Edinburgh College of Art. He is a master printmaker and is widely recognised for his inspired use of traditional printing techniques.

In 1996 he was awarded the Monbusho Scholarship which allowed him to embark on a Master’s degree in Japanese woodblock printing (mokuhanga) at Tama Art University, Tokyo. Mokuhanga is an inherently beautiful and simple printing process which has allowed Furneaux’s work to develop in a contemplative and semi-abstract way. The technique involves printing watercolour onto handmade Japanese paper, using a hand-held disc called a baren. The Japanese water-based inks allow for a wide range of vivid colours, glazes and transparency.
