This painting was probably acquired following a retrospective one man show at the University in 1982. Another of the artist's works, a drawing of 'Clio' was donated to the University in 2001. Henryk Gotlib was born in Cracow, Poland in 1890 and studied at the Academy of Fine Art in Cracow, later in Munich, Amsterdam and Paris. He had his first exhibition in Warsaw in 1918. He travelled extensively before coming to England in 1939 to paint in Cornwall, where, caught by the war, he settled for good.
