Sir William Tite (1798–1873) was the first President to serve two terms, 1861–1862 and 1867–1870. With strong City connections (he was a director of several firms), much of his work was commercial and urban. He succeeded in winning the commission to rebuild the Royal Exchange, London, although he had not won the competition and his design was far less distinguished than the winning entry by C .R. Cockerell. In later life he became an MP.
