William MacCormac was born in Belfast on 17th January 1836. Educated at the Royal Belfast Academical Institution and in Dublin and Paris, he entered Queen’s College, Belfast in October 1851 and studied the degrees of BA, MD and MA. After graduation he studied surgery in Berlin and was elected MRCS (England) in 1857. He was elected FRSI in 1864 and FRCS (England) in 1871. In 1870 he moved to London. The following year he joined the staff of St Thomas’s Hospital, London as assistant surgeon and in 1973, was appointed surgeon, a position he held for 20 years. During the course of his career from 1870 he saw considerable war service, namely in the Franco-Prussian, Turco-Serbian and Boer Wars. In 1881 he received a knighthood and in 1897, a baronetcy. He was elected president of the RCS (England) five times between 1896 and 1900.
