After studying medicine, William Jenner (1815–1898) was apprenticed to a surgeon but after taking his MD he decided to give up general practice in favour of becoming a consultant. He carried out research on typhus and typhoid before working as a physician at University College Hospital and the Hospital for Sick Children. Jenner had a long and close association with the Royal Household. He served as physician-extraordinary to Queen Victoria and was in attendance during Prince Albert’s fatal attack of typhoid.

This portrait is a copy of the original by Frank Holl and was presented to the Royal College of Physicians by University College, which had been the original recipient of the painting.
