The sitter is believed to be Sir Walter Ralegh (1552–1618). Coat of arms top left is identical to line engraving of Sir Walter Ralegh by Frederick Hendrik van Hove, after Simon de Passe. Old label on the back of the painting details ancestral descent from Ralegh family to William Drake Gould (1719–1766) of Lewtrenchard Manor near Tavistock, Devon.
